Department of Medicine: An Overview

The department of medicine is one of the oldest departments of this hospital. The department consists of eight units in all of which seven are functioning in the SMS Hospital and one in the Gangori Hospital.

The well staffed department caters to the largest fraction of outpatient population attending this hospital coming from various parts of the state and from other neighboring states.

The Medicine department provides comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services with the expert faculty having diverse experience in various fields and strives to provide quality care to the patients maintaining high standards of care.

Emergency Services:

The department provides round the clock services in the emergency department. There is a separate emergency ward for sick patients along with an adequately staffed Emergency ICU . the deparment also provides training for Diploma in emergency care.

The department has a well structured research program, looked after by a designated committee providing guidance to the PG students pursuing thesis and other research work. The department, to its credit, has several publications in international and national journals of repute. Regular CME Programs are being organized in the department. Various International, National and State Level Conferences have been organized by the department in diverse fields related to medicine.

Apart from regular OPDs in the Room no. 1 in Dhanvantri OPD block, an auxiliary OPD in room No. 17 (Allergy Clinic) and various specialty clinics in room no. 26 of Dhanvantri OPD Block are regularly run by the department.

The department also runs an ART Plus Centre, situated in the basement of Dhanvantri OPD Block, to provide diagnostic, counseling and treatment (first line as well as Second Line ART treatment) services to the people living with HIV/AIDS. Presently it has more than 17000 patients ever registered and more than 4000 patients are taking ART from the center. It also provides benefit of various Government Social welfare Schemes – Palanhar Yojna, BPL, Widow Pension Scheme, Antyodaya Ann Yogna, Bus Pass & Railway Pass to the PLHIV.

A division of Medical Oncology is functional in RK Birla Cancer Centre in the SMS Hospital premises catering to various cancer patients. The new patients seen at RKBCC in 2014 were more than 10,000 with the follow-uppatients more than 12,000.  A Bone Marrow Transplantation center at the RKBCC  is now functional and  is regularly performing the procedure.  It has successfully performed 14 autologous BMT and 10 allogenic BMTs.

A state of the art Hemophilia Treatment Centre is also coming up in near future catering to the need of adult hemophilia patients of the state.
